Snow chances updated in new forecast maps for winter storm Tuesday in N.J.

2+ day, 3+ hour ago (401+ words) Parts of northern New Jersey could see at least an inch of snow from a winter storm on Tuesday that could also bring a mix with rain and snow through central parts of the state. The National Weather Service's latest forecast issued Friday afternoon shows the highest probability for accumulating snow primarily north and west of the I-95 corridor. The storm is expected to be all rain in areas south and east of I-95, the weather service said. "There remains uncertainty given this being a few days away," the weather service said. "However, the overall set up is not very favorable for significant snowfall near and south/east of the I-95 corridor." AccuWeather's first forecast map for Tuesday's storm shows northwestern New Jersey with 1 to 3 inches of snow, along with rain, snow and ice for the I-95 corridor. AccuWeather's long-range forecast for next week…...

New legislation threatens to hit the brakes on bringing driverless cars to N.J.

3+ day, 13+ hour ago (730+ words) Riders in New Jersey who want to call an autonomous cab will have to wait as long as five years under the legislation proposed in the state senate and assembly. The proposal, approved by the Senate Transportation Committee on Nov. 10 and now before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, would create a five-year pilot program requiring three years of on-road testing with a human driver in the vehicle. The delay was criticized by advocates for blind individuals and by a company that operates autonomous ride services in other U.S. cities. Critics say the mandate would block access to technology already in use elsewhere, including in New York, where Waymo began testing in August. Residents of some New Jersey cities have already seen Waymo vehicles mapping their streets in preparation for testing autonomous ride share vehicles, but those are tests for New…...

Winningest public-school boys hoops program in state history to name new coach

4+ day, 17+ hour ago (472+ words) The winningest public-school program in New Jersey boys basketball history has brought back a familiar face. Jason Harrigan, who was an assistant for two seasons in 2019 and 2020, is expected to be approved tonight as the new coach at Camden by the district's board of education. Harrigan replaces Maalik Wayns, who stepped down in May after three seasons. Wayns posted a 75-14 record, directing Camden to back-to-back South Jersey Group 2 titles in 2024 and 2025. The Panthers shared the Olympic National crown with Paul VI last season after winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. Camden finished 22-9 overall last season, earning the No. 9 ranking in the final statewide Top 20. The Panthers lost to eventual state champion Manasquan in the Group 2 state semifinals. "It's similar to some of my other situations, starting on the ground floor and building a roster, building a program," said Harrigan, who was…...

McGreevey, Solomon hold debate a week before Jersey City voters pick a mayor

4+ day, 20+ hour ago (798+ words) The two candidates for Jersey City's next mayor discussed affordability, education, immigration and traffic in a televised debate Tuesday night, one week before a runoff election will be held. Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey and Jersey City Councilman James Solomon took questions from moderator Dan Mannarino in a 28-minute debate hosted by PIX11 in New York City. The first half of the debate focused on affordability, which the moderator identified as the "defining issue" in New York City's recent mayoral election. Solomon began by discussing a key aspect of his platform, to promote the development of additional housing units with monthly rents of $1,000 or lower " considerably under the average cost in Jersey City. "We're going to cap the rent increases that have pushed families out of the city. We're also going to stabilize property taxes by going after the corruption…...

This tiny Jersey Shore town might grow by 10 blocks, but locals are worried about the cost

1+ week, 12+ hour ago (1025+ words) Residents of an Ocean County town are raising some thorny logistical questions about the possibility of adding a new neighborhood to their municipality. Seaside Park is weighing whether to take over the South Seaside Park section of Berkeley Township after the New Jersey Supreme Court in July upheld the neighborhood's right to pursue an exit from its current town. Some residents in South Seaside Park have been pursuing annexing their neighborhood for more than a decade. "We want to be part of Seaside Park," George Giovenco, a director of the South Seaside Park Homeowners and Voters Association, said last week at the first of two public meetings in Seaside Park on the possible annexation. Several Seaside Park residents who spoke at the first of two "community listening sessions" on Nov. 10 asked about the possible impact on liquor licenses, beach access,…...

Chatting with another big winner of N.J.’s elections | What Makes Jersey Run

1+ week, 1+ day ago (814+ words) EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the latest edition of a weekly newsletter on the crazy world of New Jersey politics. You can subscribe here. If Mikie Sherrill was the biggest winner of Jersey's elections this year, Craig Coughlin wasn't too far behind. Sherrill's larger-than-expected 14-point victory in the governor's race wasn't the only stunner for Democrats. They also gained five seats to tighten their grip on the state Assembly " a few more than many insiders predicted. That gives Sherrill a bluer-than-before state Legislature to work with as she starts her time in Trenton. All of which is very good news for Coughlin, the veteran Middlesex County Democrat who will enter his record-extending fifth term as Assembly speaker with a 24-seat advantage for his caucus " 57 to 23. That includes eye-catching pickups in the 2nd, 8th, 21st, and 25th districts. Congrats on the big election wins. CC: "Thank you....
